The word sauce has Latin origins, from the Latin salsus - "salted"
Most sauces are not consumed on their own - they serve to add flavor, texture and visual appeal to a dish. Probably the oldest European sauce is garum - a fish sauce that was used in ancient Rome. Nowadays, sauces are a staple in most cuisines around the world. Recently, they have been undeservedly accused of being one of the reasons for our overweight. But if we follow the basic rule in the label of sauces, which states that our dish should not be dipped in sauce, but seasoned in moderation, then we can safely take advantage of their magic.
The sauces have undeniable positive qualities:
- They contain many useful ingredients because of the vegetables and spices in them.
- Can be used with fresh salads, baked, fried or cooked dishes as well as steamed ones.
- Create diversity in the kitchen and irresistible culinary pleasure
